What is a tank top?
By definition, a tank top is a type of sleeveless, collarless shirt. It a garment with no front opening and usually has wide shoulder straps. The name came about as swimming pools were commonly referred to as “tanks” in England. They were then introduced as undergarments in the late 1920s, and became known as undershirts. It then became accepted as casualwear in the 1970s, and became known as the athletic shirt, or “A-shirt“. From the 1980s to today, the tank top has not only become a staple garment in every wardrobe – it also represents desire, virility, rebelliousness, sportiness and freedom.
Why do guys wear tank tops?
Tank tops are perfect for showing off your arms and chest, two muscular areas that are seen as very sexy on a man, while still covering your torso for comfort and practicality. Aesthetics aside, men also wear undershirts to absorb sweat and prevent stains on more expensive work shirts, keeping them classy. And since tank tops are sleeveless, they can help regulate body heat either by keeping you cool during sports or by providing a layer of insulation under clothes.
When should a guy wear a tank top?
Tank tops for men are most commonly worn in summer as informal casualwear, for sports activities, or as underwear. Although there are no official rules these days as to when or where a tank top should be worn, professionalism and etiquette should still be observed! For example, it’s probably not considered appropriate work attire for a serious business meeting, unless worn as an undergarment under your dress shirt. However, it’s perfect for sunny days at the beach, hanging out with friends for parties, for a BBQ in summer, or for going to the gym.
How do you look good in a tank top?
The best thing about tank tops is their versatility. They make for great, comfortable casual tops paired with bermudas, or as activewear worn with sport shorts. They can also be styled with jeans on their own, or for a smarter look, can be worn with pants under a nice shirt. The fit of a tank top can range from body-hugging to loose, so choose according to comfort and occasion, as well as what flatters your body type.
Style tips: If you plan on showing off your ripped, muscular body, a form-fitting tank top is perfect. If you’re on the leaner side, pick a tank top with bigger shoulders like a muscle tank, or something slightly oversized. This would give the illusion of a broader chest. If you are curvier and want a tighter figure, go for a shapewear tank top. But don’t worry too much – many people these days love a dad bod too! And as always, if you’re in doubt, simply go for a classic, regular cut. It’s hard to go wrong!
