WHAT IS PRIDE?
Pride is defined as being pleasure, satisfaction or joy derived from one’s achievements, qualities they possess, or from who they are. Pride also refers to the event, with “Pride” being short for Gay Pride, or LGBTQIA+ Pride. This event comprises of a march and festivities held every year in June dedicated to celebrating the life, love and liberation of LGBTQIA+ people in countries where it is legal and accepted.
Pride Day
Pride Day is an event that started in the USA and is usually held on the 28th of June to commemorate Christopher Street Liberation Day, a landmark date for the gay community. This day marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, or the Stonewall Uprising, which were a series of protests by the LGBT community that came about when police tried to raid the Stonewall Inn, a gay and lesbian club in New York City, early in the morning of the 28th of June 1969. The customers who were in the Stonewall Inn at the time, largely LGBT, along with neighbourhood street people, fought back when the police started getting violent. This day triggered multiple riots, protests and marches with activists demanding the right for LGBTQIA+ people to live openly without fear.
Pride Month
The month of June, therefore, is largely considered to be Pride Month around the world. This is not to be confused with LGBTQIA+ History Month, which takes place in October in the USA, and February in the UK. There is also Campus Pride Month which falls in April, for students to celebrate and spread awareness before the school term ends for the summer break.
HOW TO CELEBRATE PRIDE?
The best way to celebrate Pride Day is to deck yourself out in rainbow clothes and accessories and participate in one of the brightly coloured marches in the main street of any city that celebrates it. There are also many parties, concerts, conferences, film events and other fun activites to participate in during Pride Month. And don’t forget to support your favourite gay bars and clubs as well, especially during this season!
Celebrating Pride in Paris, France
Pride in Paris, France, is celebrated over two weeks, from 10th June to 25th June, with festivites beginning as early as the end of May. The Paris Gay Pride Parade takes place on the 24th June this year, and the march lasts about 4 hours. People wearing colourful outfits like drag, pearls, feather boas, and glitter join the route around lunchtime starting at Place de la Bastille. They then march through Le Marais which is the main gay district of Paris, to Place de la République, and finish off with afterparties that last all through the 25th June!
